Green Chili Burp and the Aftertaste

Pick Up The Phone

The award for most transformations by a Green Chili piece goes to "Pick Up The Phone." This track started as three different pieces, later merged together, and has had several titles. Greg and I worked up what is now the second half of this track right after Kurt went back to Dallas. Greg had an interesting bass lick that, at the time, was something of a stretch for his hands, and he made the comment that we ought to call the song "Reach" since that was what he had to do to play it. That triggered the brain synapses to recall a catch phrase from an advertising blitz by a major telecommunications company. The rest of the song fell from there.

It still seemed kinda short, so right before we went into the studio, we decided to merge another track with it, putting the guitar solo at an unusual place in the song for a modern tune, the beginning. Alan laid down a nice track in the studio and really brought the song together. But the real magic came when we returned to lay down the vocal tracks. After hearing the vocal content of the song, Mark Murray, my co-producer, suggested that we somehow record the audio track for one of those many phone sex infomercials that ran on late night TV. We went back to my folks house that night and did just that. We then added clips from the infomercials into the song, and the magic was complete. The rest is up to your interpretation.
