This piece is part of a three-part suite I had written in D minor. ("The saddest of all keys," according to Nigel Tufnel.) Though I had never really intended it to be a part of the Green Chili experience, it made such a great instrumental lead-in to several other Chili tunes when performed live. And since we had worked it up as part of the live production, it made sense to go ahead and put it on the album. By the time we got into the studio, it had pretty much become a part of "I Don't Know" so that's how we recorded it. "Paradox" was recorded as a separate track on a different reel from "I Don't Know" and Mark and I put it together digitally in the final mastering.
The title deserves a little bit of an explanation, I suppose. As I mentioned, this was one of a three-part piece, the first part actually. I wasn't planning to title the suite, simply calling it something like "Untitled." But when this portion became an entity on its own, I started setting it apart, calling it "Untitled - A," which gave it a title, creating a paradox. The rest is history, so to speak.
