For a variety of reasons, mostly because I don't want to get my butt sued, I am not able to publish the real title of this song, or its lyrics for that matter. When you get the album, however, you'll know what it is and understand why. Especially if you're a corporate type.
One afternoon, Greg came over with his bass and showed me a lick he'd worked up with those "other" people he was rehearsing with. Fortunately, he decided (I guess) that he would rather work that lick into something for Green Chili. So I heard it, sat in shock for a brief moment, and came up with a rhythmic pattern to follow the style of the musical notion. After hearing it just once, I knew we had yet another bass intro for a song, and shortly thereafter, Greg and I worked up most of the rest of the music for the song. Over the next few weeks, we worked up the final arrangement of the music with Bob during our Friday night practice times.
If you've taken the time to read the band history, you'll recall that one of our influences was the weekly trip across the street for our Gatorade break. I was on a plane flight to Lubbock when the inspiration to write a "Gatorade Tribute" hit me, and I went to work. Not being able to come up with any better way to talk about the different flavors of Gatorade, I placed the context of the song in a dream. I also chose not to make the verses of the song, the actual telling of the dream, rhyme in any structured pattern, reemphasizing the stream of consciousness world of dreams. The chorus was what came to me first, and it's where I think the true magic of the song is.
This song is a Green Chili Fan Favorite. A large majority of the people who have the album or who have heard it several times claim that this is their favourite track. In places where I have had the opportunity to perform any of the Green Chili tracks in a live musical setting (solo, mostly), this has been the one song that I've been able to pull off, and doing so has generated a new following of Green Chili in Denton. I've done several arrangements of this track, none recorded as of yet, that I would like to include on a remix disc, if I ever get around to doing one of those either.
And, of course, if anyone wants to license the song from me to use in a Gatorade advertising campaign, please feel free to contact me.
